Guidelines for Grants

I. General Objectives of Grantmaking

The Sally Hughes Church Foundation is generally interested in assisting non-profit organizations with 501(c)(3) status that have programs that will achieve all or some of the following objectives:

  • Provide activities and programs for youth that will help them develop individual self reliance and good health
  • Assist youth to develop skills and attitudes to prevent violent behavior
  • Enrich the quality of life for youth through cultural activities
  • Teach parents the value of applying quality parenting skills and creating a nurturing environment
  • Improve the well being of youth
  • Strengthen the family unit
  • Prevent or alleviate conditions of youth deprivation, disability, violence, and abuse

II. Grantmaking Procedures

  1. The Board of Directors will investigate and review organizations which meet the Foundation’s grantmaking criteria on an annual basis. Such review will generally be undertaken between May and September of each year.
  2. The Foundation will only consider grants to organizations with a demonstrated ability to provide meaningful ongoing benefits to youth of Monterey County, California.
  3. The Foundation will consider grants for both building projects and programs.
  4. Grant applications will generally be funded in September of each year.
  5. The Foundation does not accept unsolicited requests for grants. All unsolicited requests for grants will be returned.

III. Limitations on Grantmaking

The Foundation will not normally make grants to support sectarian religious programs; to support agencies which receive substantial tax support; to establish or add to endowments; or to support tax supported educational institutions.
